District 207 Administrator Finalist for National Career and Technical Education Award

Dr. Laura Cook, Career Coordinator in District 207, recently earned the “Association for Career and Technical Education Region III Career Guidance Award” which qualifies her for the national award in the same category that will be awarded during the ACTE national conference in December.

This award recognizes guidance counselors and career development professionals who have made significant contributions to advocate, educate and communicate the value of CTE as a viable career option to a variety of audiences in their communities. Members employed as full-time school counselors and/or career development professionals are eligible recipients of this award.

Region III includes educators from Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin. She was eligible for the Region III award after earning the state award during the Illinois Association for Career and Technical Education annual conference.

Dr. Cook has been with District 207 for 15 years. Her first ten years were spent as the director of a federal grant-funded program: JumpStart, whose focus was to provide work-readiness and paid work experience programming for at-risk students. In her role as career coordinator since 2014, she has worked to advance the district goals which included expansion of career options and opportunities for all students and development of alternative training strategies and tools to enhance student and teacher skill sets.

In addition, Martha Eldredge Stark, recently retired Executive Director of NSERVE, was named the recipient of the “ACTE Region III Lifetime Achievement Award.” NSERVE is a Career and Technical Education consortium in the northern Chicago suburbs that represents approximately 24,000 secondary students in five districts. NSERVE helps the nine high schools it serves secure State and Federal grants to provide the professional development and materials needed to teach Career and Technical Education courses. District 207 is one of the member districts.

The Lifetime Achievement Award goes to an individual member whose dedicated contributions have been identified with the work and purposes of the association over an extended period of time.

The National ATCE Excellence Awards Gala is scheduled to take place December 2, 2020.
