District 207 Students Advance to State History Fair and National History Day

Students from Maine East, Maine South, and Maine West advanced to the State History Fair after competing virtually in the City-Wide Finals. Students created their projects before the Stay-at-Home order, and then had to add new analysis and information at home to put their museum exhibits together and submit the project to the Chicago History Museum and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. This included virtual submissions where students took pictures or utilized images of projects.

Alisha Junaid, Ceasar Graham, and Suad Hussein from Maine East created a project titled “Evolution of the First Muslims in America” that explores the impact of Muslim immigration to the United States that advanced to the State History Fair.

From Maine South, nine students advanced to state:

  • Mackenzie Wright’s media documentary, “P.T. Barnum: Accepting the Abnormal”
  • William Buerk’s individual exhibit, “A Century of Progress: The 1933-1934 World’s Fair”
  • Victor Pasev’s individual research paper, “Jane: Underground Abortion Coalition”
  • Avery Dolson and Molly O’Brien’s exhibit, “Turning the Tide of Women’s Swimwear”
  • Sophie DiMaso and Sarah Byambaa’s exhibit “Our Lady of the Angels Fire”
  • Brianna Barry and Sydney Lucas’s exhibit “Dollhouse of Death”

From Maine West, 15 students advanced to state:

  • Jameson Beckman’s documentary, “Let Freedom Swing, Jazz and the Civil Rights Movement”
  • Rose Kurutz documentary, “AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power”
  • Samantha Bahena and Dominika Szal’s documentary, “Lucy Flowers: Planting Seeds for Juvenile Justice”
  • Iwo Gesing, Regina Saponieri, and Maha Zaihi’s documentary, “Lighting Up the Future: Edison versus Tesla”
  • Jesus Vallejo and Oscar Chipres’ website, “Fugitive Slave Law: Breaking the Barrier of Bondage”
  • Aaron Gonzalez’s paper, “Heart of the City: The Harold Washington Story”
  • Ann Kalena’s paper, “The Manhattan Project: Breaking the Barriers of Society and the Atom”
  • Isabella Hydzik’s paper, “Beating Tuberculosis: Chicago Public Health”
  • Lucy Ellsworth’s paper, “Myra Bradwell: Paving the Way for Female Lawyers”
  • Natalia Jesion’s paper, “The Transcontinental Railroad”
  • Nicole Konsulova’s paper, “Smashing Gay Oppression: How the Stonewall Riots Put Gay Liberation on the Map”

In addition to advancing to state, several students advanced to National History Day. “Dollhouse of Death” exhibit, “Jane: Underground Abortion Coalition” research paper and the “AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power” documentary each advanced on to the next competition.  

Isabella Hydzik of Maine West was the recipient of a four year scholarship of $2,500 per year should she choose to attend to Millikin University.
