Freshmen students will experience a curricular change in the area of mathematics the district believes will have a positive impact on students’ learning in math. For the Class of 2023, students will learn mathematics as part of an Integrated Math sequence within the curriculum. Instead of a class sequence of Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2, integrated mathematics re-imagines these courses as Math 1, Math 2, and Math 3. In those courses, algebraic, geometric and statistical thinking are embedded throughout all three courses rather than separated out. Much of the elementary mathematics curriculum is already organized in this way. Spiraling concepts in this way supports the continued practice of mathematical skills and concepts to help embed them in long-term memory. The materials that will be used in the classes are from Mathematics Vision Project.
There are two videos that help explain the change that will impact only freshmen in 2019-20 as well as the grading approach in integrated math.
