As part of the update to the Board of Education in August, Assistant Superintendent for Business Mary Kalou shared that the District is heavy involved in meetings to discuss the building needs as part of the design process.
District-wide Construction Team/ Building Construction Teams
The second round summer building team meetings has started. Each school was updated on the current phasing plan and additional details were provided on the renovated spaces.
Weekly Core Group Meeting
This group meets weekly and includes Wight, Pepper, Director of Facilities and Assistant Superintendent for Business. This group is working on all aspects of the projects including technical items such as school modeling, school space field verification, due diligence, deferred maintenance items. Phasing, soil borings and topographical/utility surveys are discussed by the core group as well.
Model Classrooms
Furniture for each of the six additional model classrooms has been ordered. This will give teachers an opportunity to test the furniture to determine which works best for which classes based upon a number of factors.
Design
This group is working on the design milestones. The biggest milestone will be the schematic design. Schematic design is simply a design that shows the actual space locations, square footages and general concepts. It does not include all of the small detail elements. The schematic designs are completed and Pepper Construction is providing an estimate on these designs. Wight is continuing into design development, which will provide a much greater level of design detail.
Cost Estimates
Pepper will be providing a second cost estimate in August. This estimate will begin to shift away from the cost per square foot estimates. The new estimate will begin to take the actual designs and provide pricing. A two-day cost estimate meeting is scheduled for the week of August 5th.
Construction Phasing
The first draft of phasing at each school has been presented. A detailed action plan on all of the impacted spaces is being prepared and additional meetings with the buildings are scheduled to continue to refine the phasing plan. Actual Phase 1 construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2020.
