A large group of people stand together on a wet street in Times Square at night under illuminated billboards and a W 47 St street sign.Thirty-three students from Maine South and Maine East High Schools, accompanied by their fashion teachers, traveled to New York City for a three-day fashion industry experience that brought classroom learning to life in one of the world’s fashion capitals.

Throughout the trip, students explored the many facets of the fashion industry, connecting their classroom studies to real-world experiences in fashion design, textiles, merchandising, costume design, and trend forecasting. Highlights included visiting the Fashion Institute of Technology, exploring New York’s Garment District and Mood Fabrics, and observing the latest styles and trends along Fifth Avenue and SoHo.

Students also visited the Museum of Broadway to explore the role of costume design in theatrical storytelling, attended a Broadway performance of MJ the Musical, and participated in a workshop with a Broadway costume designer. The experience concluded with a visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where students viewed the iconic costume art fashion exhibit.

The trip provided students with valuable opportunities to see the connections between fashion, art, culture, design, and business while gaining inspiration from industry professionals and the creative energy of New York City. It was an incredible experience for students and teachers alike, filled with opportunities to learn, explore, and build connections between classroom instruction and the professional world. The trip reinforced the value of hands-on, experiential learning and gave students a broader perspective on the many career pathways available within the fashion industry.
