New Cell Phone Use Policy for 2026-27 School Year

Illinois Senate Bill 2427 now requires a “bell-to-bell” ban on personal wireless devices, with flexibility for high schoolers during lunch and passing periods. We appreciate students’ and parents’ cooperation in following this guidance to avoid consequences.

At the start of each class, students must place personal cell phones in the classroom’s designated storage unit. Smartwatches, smartglasses, and similar devices must be turned off. Personal tablets, laptops, and gaming devices should be stored where the teacher designates. Earbuds and headphones must stay in backpacks during instructional time. See Student Handbook Sections 6.30 and 6.80, and Board Policy 7:190 for full rules. Violations are subject to disciplinary procedures and due process.

School-issued Chromebooks are exempt when used for instruction. These computers along with other school resources are sufficient for all planned learning activities, so personal devices aren’t needed in class.

Outside of class (passing periods, lunch), students may use personal devices. There are two exceptions:

  • Device required for a documented disability under a 504 plan or medical plan
  • Device required under a student’s IEP or approved school plan

Families seeking an exception should contact the Assistant Principal for Student Supports.

Thank you for helping us implement this new State law.
