Maine South High School is proud to present Hadestown: Teen Edition, a bold and captivating production that brings one of the world’s oldest stories to life in a powerful new way. Through the voices and talents of students, the timeless myth of Orpheus and Eurydice is reimagined for today’s audiences. The production explores themes of love, hope, power and the choices that shape our world. Performances will be in the Maine South auditorium on April 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. and April 19 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available online at mainesouth.seatyourself.biz and at the door (cash or check only) for $15.
This production represents one of the most ambitious and challenging theatrical undertakings Maine South students have experienced. Unlike a traditional musical, Hadestown unfolds as a folk opera, with music and storytelling seamlessly intertwined. The cast and crew have worked tirelessly to master this continuous, immersive style, requiring exceptional focus, collaboration and trust.
“Producing this show has been one of the most challenging theatrical undertakings our students have faced,” explains Maine South Fine Arts Teacher and Musical Director Joey Fitzpatrick. “The company must sustain the rhythm of the piece without the typical pauses or resets that many musicals provide.”
What makes this production especially meaningful is the creativity students have demonstrated in bringing this story to life. Without the elaborate technical resources of a professional stage, they have embraced the opportunity to think imaginatively, working together to create a compelling and visually engaging world using the tools available to them. Their innovation and dedication have transformed limitations into strengths, resulting in storytelling that is both inventive and deeply authentic.
Hadestown also invites audiences to reflect on the world around us. Through its rich storytelling, the show explores cycles of fear, labor, power and environmental change, reminding us that the questions at the heart of this ancient myth remain profoundly relevant today.
We invite the community to join us for an unforgettable evening of music, storytelling and heart. Hadestown: Teen Edition is a moving reminder that even in the face of uncertainty, there is beauty in the attempt, and, like Orpheus, we choose to sing the song anyway.
Come experience the power of storytelling and support these remarkable student artists as they bring Hadestown to life.
