Overview:
Maine East High school has a strong commitment to educating our academically gifted and talented population and that support is provided through the four-year Gifted Lyceum program that challenges students to reach their academic and psycho-social potential. The Gifted Lyceum serves the students who score in the top 5% of the CogAT test with a two-year academic program and a two-year leadership program. This program seeks to enrich the curriculum of enrolled students to maximize their achievement and develop their problem solving abilities through critical thinking models. Although open to all students in District 207, students need to attend Maine East in order to participate in the program. However, students living in the Maine South or Maine West attendance area can attend Maine East to participate in the program if they provide their own transportation.
Students are enrolled in year-long courses during their 9th and 10th grade years that enrich the academic development beyond the accelerated curriculum. During their 11th and 12th grade years, they participate in two Leadership for Life year-long courses that employ service learning and creativity development. All of this supplements the high quality and challenging curriculum open to all students at Maine East. In order to fulfill the program requirements across the four years, students graduate with a minimum of nine Advanced Placement/Dual Credit courses.
Gifted Placement Testing:
Students who wish to be considered for the Gifted Lyceum need to submit or be tested for the Fall MAP test sometime before November 1 of their 8th grade year. Students scoring in the top 20% nationally in both Math and Reading will be considered for further testing utilizing the Cognitive Abilities Test, which is administered in December. Final decisions regarding placement in the Gifted Lyceum are finalized in early February.
