Maine South High School student Serra Yardimcioglu (11th grade) earned an award and certificate as a Runner-Up in the Prose Category of the Illinois Association of Teachers of English (IATE) Student Poetry, Prose, Art and Photography Contest.
This competition provides an opportunity to recognize students’ work and showcase the creativity of young writers and artists from across the state. Serra’s winning prose submission is titled Where Reality Ends.
“Serra has both natural talent and an exceptional work ethic,” shares Maine South English Teacher Christine Headley. “She genuinely enjoys the written word, whether those words are part of her own writing or that of others, and she asks incredible questions about language. It has been both an honor and a pleasure to work with her this year, and I am proud of her IATE win and of her daily efforts!”
IATE serves on a committee of professional English teachers at all grade levels throughout the state. They offer a variety of activities and publications and also participate in regional activities throughout the year. Arranged by districts across the state, they provide networking as well as teaching tips, research, and professional development.
